Lechantre named new Senegal coach

Date:

Pierre Lechantre has been named as the new coach of Senegal.

The Senegalese football federation have confirmed the appointment of the 62-year-old former Cameroon coach, although the terms of the contract have yet to be revealed.

Lechantre, who led the Indomitable Lions to CAF Africa Cup of Nations glory in 2000 and has also coached Mali, was chosen ahead of Bruno Metsu, who steered Senegal to the FIFA World Cup™ quarter-finals in 2002.

The nation has been without a coach since Amara Traore lost his job in February after a poor performance at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

Senegal booked their place in the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament on Monday, beating Oman 2-0 in a play-off to clinch the last place at London 2012.
