Obama: Immigration reform still a ‘top priority’

Date:

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says passing comprehensive immigration reform is still a « top priority » for his administration. But he is offering no plan for getting legislation through the U.S. Congress.
The president is blaming Republican opposition for the lack of progress on the issue. He says Republicans who once supported immigration reform have changed their positions. He says his administration’s approach is to push those Republicans to once again work with Democrats on reform.
Obama is holding a Hispanic roundtable at the White House Wednesday and taking questions submitted by voters online. Democrats see Hispanics as a key constituency in the November 2012 election.
A strong majority of Hispanics supported Obama’s election in 2008. But his support among Hispanics has declined, as it has in the broader population.
